Spoon River
a musical anthology
This multi-character show musicalizes monologues from the Edgar Lee Masters' classic:
"Spoon River Anthology".
Each character, in his time, steps forward from the community and shares
the one great truth about their time on this earth. Each personal drama, when juxtaposed
with the passions, fears, prejudice and hopes of the others in their community,
inculcates a pathos no one individual story could achieve on its own.
This work goes one further than the source material and tethers interrelated
monologues with the real life story of Edgar Lee Masters' hallucinatory and near-death
illness during the time of his writing what would become his greatest masterwork.
The design of the work can utilizes as few as 12 singer-actors to as many as the stage can hold.
Actors may play individual or multiple roles, as the production warrants.
Ensemble pieces are interspersed with the monologues and like Masters' work,
the catharsis of the whole is greater than its individual parts.
